Hypertension is the most commonly treated condition in adult primary care offices throughout the United States; affecting more than 60% of individuals over the age of 65. Treatment guidelines have been fairly uniform historically. However, new guidelines and recommendations are prompting discussion among nephrologists. Jamie Johnston, MD, professor of nephrology at UPMC, explains the details of these evolving guidelines put forth by the Joint National Commission, and how the treatment paradigm is shifting for patients with hypertension.
